Introduction
The creative industries, as some of the largest and most digitized sectors in the UK, experience mixed effects from new technologies. On one hand, these technologies can reduce the carbon impact of high-impact sectors. On the other, they increase reliance on energy-intensive processes like data rendering, server farms, and audience-streaming. This boosts the data CO2 footprint.
Research Opportunity
Despite the significant role of the creative industries in climate change, there is limited research or policy to help these sectors reach net zero. This project will explore the impact of digital adoption on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the creative industries. It will assess the digital decarbonisation potential in sectors like film, games, and live performance. The project will also examine sectors like fashion and museums that are slower in adopting digital technologies. The goal is to manage their transformation sustainably.
