Introduction East Call Curatorial Residency is a unique opportunity for emerging curators to gain insights into the Hungarian contemporary art scene. The program helps participants understand the scene within a broader, regional context.

Program Overview East Call is an intense 2-week program that focuses on the roles and responsibilities of curators. It examines the contemporary art scene, including artists’ statuses, curatorial conditions, and institutional situations. The program encourages understanding issues affecting contemporary art in the Central Eastern European region.

Goals and Objectives East Call fosters dialogue on curatorial issues and explores the concept of “the curatorial” in Central Eastern Europe. It uses open, conversation-based methods to transfer knowledge and experience.

Target Audience The program is tailored for emerging curators and curators-to-be who are still studying and planning to work in contemporary art. It introduces participants to current practices and mechanisms of curating in relation to exhibitions, institutions, and cultural politics.

Program Activities Over two weeks, participants will deepen their professional knowledge by exploring contemporary exhibitions, engaging with curatorial case studies, participating in workshops, visiting artist studios, and networking. This hands-on experience is enhanced by discussions with professionals active in the Budapest contemporary art scene.

Program Benefits The participation fee of 1200 Euros covers office facilities, workshop participation, guest lectures, museum entries, special events, and public transport in Budapest.

Program History Since 2019, Easttopics has organized curatorial residencies focusing on the contemporary art scene of the Central Eastern European region. The program connects participants with a network of diverse, visionary practitioners, offering a unique environment for collaboration and learning.
