Role Summary

The Director & Curator of Collections is a key member of the museum’s senior leadership team, playing a pivotal role in the strategic direction, day-to-day management, and presentation of Frye’s permanent collection, archives, and registration. This role requires managing a team of 3-5 staff in collections and registration, and collaborating with the exhibitions team.

Responsibilities include fostering a culture of collaboration, community, and respect while emphasizing Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEAIB) across all department areas.

Directorial Responsibilities

The Director & Curator’s duties involve overseeing the care, preservation, and risk management of Frye’s collections. Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervising team members and volunteers on collection-related projects.
  • Overseeing the EmbARK database and collection data management.
  • Managing loans and displays of collection items.
  • Collaborating on tools and resources to enhance collection access and visibility.
  • Managing the annual budget and policy updates for the collections department.
  • Participating in museum events, including planning and travel.

Curatorial Responsibilities

The Director & Curator will guide the growth of the collection, ensuring alignment with the museum’s strategic and curatorial priorities. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing curatorial leadership for the permanent collection.
  • Developing collection plans and acquisition priorities.
  • Curating exhibitions and displays to advance new narratives.
  • Co-leading Arts Committee meetings and ensuring policy adherence.
  • Researching and proposing potential acquisitions.
  • Contributing to interpretive strategies, publicity materials, and public programs.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Curatorial expertise in modern and contemporary art.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CMS/database systems.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and prioritization skills.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • An advanced degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a related role at an art museum, collection, or similar entity.
