Overview

The Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA) boasts one of Australia’s finest art collections and significant platforms for contemporary Australian art. AGSA serves as a major cultural resource for South Australians and a year-round cultural tourism destination. The Director role is a pivotal leadership position, steering the gallery’s strategic aim to become Australia’s most inspiring art destination.

Historical Background

Founded in 1881, AGSA houses a premier art collection in Adelaide’s cultural precinct on North Terrace. The gallery’s growth has been fueled by private donations and purpose-built exhibition spaces, reflecting South Australia’s ambition for excellence in art and access.

Collection and Exhibitions

AGSA’s remarkable collection includes over 47,000 works spanning 2,000 years, various art forms, and global reach. The gallery offers permanent and temporary exhibitions and programs that highlight artists’ voices and visions. Key projects include:

Visitor Engagement

AGSA engages more visitors per capita than any other gallery in Australia, operating 364 days a year. It enhances Adelaide’s reputation as a culturally rich city, generating significant revenue and elevating South Australia’s cultural profile.

Educational Programs

The gallery aims to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of visual arts for people of all ages. It offers outstanding educational programs, lectures, talks, and children’s activities, transforming every visit into a life-changing experience.

Recent Achievements and Strategic Plan

Recent achievements include increased attendance for exhibitions, expanded private giving, broadened digital initiatives, and a strategic acquisitions strategy adding over 4200 works to the collection. In 2024, AGSA’s Board endorsed a new Strategic Plan to 2028, outlining the gallery’s vision and focus areas for sustainable growth.

Director Role

The new Director will develop AGSA’s footprint, operations, collections, exhibitions, and research, aiming to make it Australia’s most inspiring art destination.
