Institute of Fine Arts at a Glance

Founded in 1932 on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the IFA specializes in graduate teaching and advanced research in art history, archaeology, and art conservation and technology. Its commitment to global engagement and research-driven teaching covers a wide historical range, from ancient Egyptian to contemporary art and architecture. The Institute’s faculty benefits from collaborations with the Department of Art History, enhancing both teaching and research.

Academic Programs and Facilities

The Institute offers PhD and MA programs in Art History and Archaeology, and an MA/MS in Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works. Students gain practical experience through internships and fellowships in major art institutions worldwide, supported by a robust alumni network. The IFA operates independently within NYU, with its faculty and administrative staff. It resides in two historic buildings in the cultural corridor of NYU, featuring extensive resources, including two major library collections and a state-of-the-art Conservation Center.

Role and Responsibilities of the Director

The Director will be responsible for:

• Envisioning the IFA’s long-term strategic direction.
• Expanding fundraising efforts and donor relationships.
• Enhancing the strength of the Institute’s faculty and staff.
• Building interdisciplinary partnerships within NYU.
• Strengthening connections with global and local art institutions.
• Promoting a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility.
• Overseeing capital improvements and technological upgrades.
• Building a supportive and efficient internal management team.
• Encouraging shared governance for transparent decision-making.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $333,850 to $403,850.
