Job Description

The Curator of Photography plays a crucial role at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF). This person oversees the growth and care of the photography collection and exhibition program. Reporting to the Curator in Charge of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, they handle all collection and curatorial programming aspects. Key responsibilities include research, collection management, and the development and organization of exhibitions and publications. The curator also engages in public-facing activities, building relationships within the Bay Area’s artistic and collecting communities to enhance the program and expand the collection.

Key Responsibilities

Collection Management

• Actively enhances FAMSF’s photography collection through purchases, acquisitions, gifts, and selective deaccessioning.
• Focuses on diversifying the photographers represented.
• Ensures the long-term preservation of the collection by collaborating with Registration and Conservation teams.

Exhibition Organization

• Plans and manages photography exhibitions at the Legion of Honor and de Young Museum that showcase artistic quality, innovation, and scholarly depth.

Educational and Promotional Activities

• Writes curatorial content for websites, catalogues, and exhibition graphics.
• Engages with digital and social media to promote collection awareness.

External and Community Engagement

• Develops and maintains relationships with collectors, dealers, and educational institutions.
• Organizes public lectures, tours, and meetings to enhance public and donor engagement.
• Represents FAMSF in various internal and external settings, discussing artistic and programmatic aspects of the photography collection.

Fundraising and Development

• Collaborates with museum leadership to identify and secure funding for new acquisitions, exhibitions, and publications.
• Actively participates in fundraising and strategic meetings to support the photography program.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Art History, Ph.D. preferred.
• Minimum of five years of curatorial experience in photography.
• Demonstrated ability to manage museum collections and conduct innovative exhibitions.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in teaching and public speaking.

Working Conditions

• Hybrid work schedule available.
• Full benefits package including health, dental, vision, and retirement plans.
• Salary range: $115,000 to $130,000 annually.
